Since we all seem to be choosing a word for the year here at the Chocolate Box, I’ve chosen the word FOCUS.
Last year was a mess of distractions. The best beloved’s health was a cause of concern but it was more than that. I seem to have lost the ability to concentrate.
It wasn’t just the writing. I wasn’t getting anything done. The slightest excuse and I was off fiddling with anything that would stop me having buckle down. Even ironing seemed like a good idea.
Maybe it was a significant birthday. The realisation that at this age my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and died within months. Subconsciously, maybe, I was panicking. Time was running out, I was running around like a headless chicken.and nothing was getting done. Well, not much running, to be honest… what I was actually doing was sitting at a screen and rewriting the same sentence, paragraph, chapter over and over. I wasn’t even taking a year out and just having fun.
Well, here’s the truth. Time is still running out and I need to make the most of it so I’m making a list of the things I want to do this year.
Finish the book. Spend more time with family and friends. Eat good food. Drink a little wine for my heart’s sake. Write a couple of short stories that I’ve been promising myself. And only sit at the keyboard when I’m actually writing words because life’s too short to rewrite the same damn sentence fifty times!
And eat more chocolate!
